Blog linking - existing topics?

I don't think we can add a link to a post to an existing topic can we?  If so, how?  If not, is this something that can be added in the future?  I hate to have to decide at the moment of publishing a post whether there needs to be a forum topic associated with it.  There are many times I have members add content who totally forget to associate a forum topic to it and then the moment is lost when they go in and make a forum topic about the same post.  There's no way to link the two then, is there?

Hey Cynthia,

Unfortunately being able to create a blog post from an existing forum topic is not currently a feature of the plugin, however I've seen it come up in discussion before and believe it is in a list to be considered for a future version.

I am not sure if either of us has got what it is you are asking for  quite right,.,

Bit... IF you are asking if you can create a new forum topic from an existing blog post then the answer is yes. Just edit the blog post -set the forum link details and update the post.

Ok, Ike.  That was what I was asking.  I hope it is being considered.  BBpress, for all it's faults had that feature in its blog linking plugin and it was very helpful.

We have a lot of old school members who consider a wordpress website as new fangled and weird.  They are used to coding in html and because of that, the website was static and they pretty much put anything and everything into their forums.  So say, someone writes up a fantastic book review.  Instead of writing a wordpress post about it, they will write it up in the forums, under general discussion.  How is anyone ever going to find that???  I would love to be able to go in and copy and paste a wordpress post with the same title as their topic and associate the two.

Another example is a custom post type of event.  If someone thinks about it, they can add that event to the forums as a topic.  But sometimes, members want to see if others can help them with an event.  If they respond favorably, then it's put on the calendar.  So 3 or 4 people volunteer to help at that event in the forums, it's put on the calendar as an event post, but the event on the calendar can't be associated with that forum topic about it.  Another has to be made if you want to have any forum discussion on that event.  And that confuses our already confused members.

Perhaps have a new plugin that goes the other way?  Link a new blog post to a topic?  So if someone sees a forum topic that should have a wordpress post on it, they can "create a blog post" and associate that topic with it?  Just an idea.

In the meantime, I just made it so that a forum post will automatically be created in a particular forum.  I'll probably end up having to move a few topics to another forum, but oh well.  Just more work for me.

Another way around this limitation would be to have the ability to merge topics.  So that one topic that has a lot of discussion about a topic could be merged into the newly created (and associated to a blog post) topic.

I see that I can move individual posts to another topic, so I guess I could do it that way.  Just a lot of work moving all the posts in an established topic to an empty topic.  Wish there were a way to do it in bulk.

you can also do some merging using the forum tools... you might not get the expected results since its sorted by date....
