Is there a way to link a new blog post to an existing forum topic? Not really concerned if the existing forum posts get carried over to the blog post. Thank-you.

No, not currently... that would be tricky if you had multiple posts linked to the same topic...
we do have open tickets for creating linked wp post from existing topic and creating linked topic from existing wp post... but first time someone has asked for this...

figured out way to do this, I have seen the question come up before so I figured I would share
say if you have a forum topic named baseball
create a blog post baseball 1
generate the blog post with the forum link
go to forum and merge the baseball topic into the new baseball 1 topic
edit blog post title and slug from baseball 1 to baseball
edit forum topic and slug from baseball 1 to baseball
since the original forum topic is older all the forum posts will precede the newly created post but if you only copied the original forum post to the blog post just delete the latest post or edit the first post on the forum topic to match the blog post if it is different.
All comments from the forum post transfer over to the blog post
It's a down and dirty way to do it but it works.
