It does not create a forum topic. It only appears so. Meaning it says it's done but it's not done, hence the unchecked box upon refreshing page.
I use OptimizePress which has several custom field boxes (Blog post options and SEO options), also the Yoast SEO plugin adds a custom panel, and the eMember plugin adds a "Choose protection" panel.
does it work if those or all other plugins are deactivated? might as well see if conflict...
for yoast seo, make sure that the option to rewrite ugly permalinks is off...

Disabling the OptimizePress features is not an option, they are built-in to the theme. Yoast ugly permalinks is off. I did try removing all from screen options.
Is there a good step-by-step install for this blog-linking plug-in available? I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling but no luck.
I just opened a post. I checked the link post to forum (and update forum post) option. Upon updating the post it seems successful. At the bottom of the page in the "Link to forum" panel it says "This post is linked to forum".
I click the button "View Topic in Forum" and I'm taken to the forum where I'm greeted with the following message: "Access denied - you do not have permission to view this page."
I return to the post edit page and refresh it. Scrolling to the bottom of the page, the "Link to forum" panel no longer displays that the post is linked to a forum. It is empty, with open check boxes, as if I never did anything the first time around.
I really want to help you guys help me. I'm not sure what I can do to be clearer about it.
Thanks.
UPDATE: OK, now, it seems that refreshing the post edit page DOES NOT reset the forum linking feature. It still says the topic is linked to the forum. THis is a positive step!
However, upon visiting that link (via the post edit page, as it does not actually appear in the forum) I am still greeted with the message: "Access denied - you do not have permission to view this page"
Here goes:
Something is wacky, because now it is back to no link created.
I just logged in to the blog post that I yesterday told you the link WAS created for...only now it is no longer checked. The panel at the edit post page bottom still offers me the opportunity to create a link to the forum.
So there it is. No link is permanently created. It merely APPEARS that what when the post is first updated (with forum link checked).
I can only assume that this is why I get that "Access Denied" message...there is no post actually there (in the forum).
Can we please just forget the link and concentrate in the forum topic? So - is this now confirmed that the forum topic is NOT created? And if this IS the case then I still question whether one of the other plugins is doing something it shouldn't or - just causing some sort of barrier or conflict.

Something's wrong with your forum. This is the second time I've returned hours later to find my reply has vanished. I drop the little icon in the box and all, and it says my reply is awaiting moderation...then I check back later and it's as if I've never replied.
Anyway, to answer your question...No. No forum topic is created. Disabling Yoast SEO has no affect on that.
forum working fine - at least for us and no other complaints about lost posts... its moderated because you are a guest...
Andy will be by in morning to get this...

So what we need to do here is determine why the topic is not getting created.
While I wouldn't say this is a unique report it IS a rare one and the first we have had with V5 - and linking is used by a lot of our users. So this still points to an environmental issue of some sort and the only way to determine and best find that is by a process of elimination. That really means deactivating other plugins that also populate or effect the creation of blog posts and trying to create a linked topic. If t works - then reactivating them one at a time and trying a post again top see if it breaks at any point.
