I was very disappointed because I had previously tried the beta version of the buddypress plugin, and I got a memory error. This was a few months back. I paid $39 for a silver membership just to get this particular plugin (assuming it was fixed by now).. and downloaded the plugin, but get the exact same error
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 523800 bytes) in /problem-with-post-edit-buttonome/mycoinc1/public_html/wp-includes/option.php on line 1670
I have two different websites, one with a 3 GB VPS (So I should have plenty of memory) and another with shared hosting and both do the exact same thing
A '3 GB' VPS doesn't have anything to do with it. What is important is how much memory is allocated to your php pre-processor and the error suggest that this is not enough.
WP can probably just about survive with 32 MB allocated but really needs about 96MB and actually tries, I believe, to allocate 128MB. The more complex the theme and the more plugins you haver active then the more you will need. It's a simple equation. The more code to be run - the more php RAM is needed.
You can find out what you currently have allocated by looking at your php.ini file or perhaps - the environment tab of the SP admin toolbox.

and thus far, you are the only person to have reported such an issue with the plugin since its release... it was fixed for all users that reported back during the beta...
and as Andy says, memory is meaningless if php is not allowed to use it...
if you can provide more info on when this is occurring and what you bp and sp bp settings are, we can try to evaluate... any other bp plugins?
