Can't get Post-By-Email to work

I created an email address for each of my forums (set up a new Google Apps account to do so), and I'm receiving the emails fine in my email inbox, but none of my replies and posts are showing up in my Simple:Press forum.

• I added the unique post-by-email address to each of the forums inside Manage Groups and Forums > Edit Forum > Unique Post by Email Address for this forum

• I updated permissions to allow all users to reply by email and create a new topic by email

Where I'm stuck (and where HOPEFULLY a fix will resolve the problem) is under Options > Email Settings > Post by Email Settings

I have no idea what is supposed to go there. Here's what I have:

Name of the Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com (I've also tried imap.gmail.com and gmail.com and pop.gmail.com, to no avail)

Port: 465  (I'm also tried 110, which was there by default, and 995 but neither one worked)

Password: my Google Apps password

Use TLS (off)

Use SSL (on) (I've also tried this set to OFF, and that didn't help)

When I update email options and test mail server connection I either get an endlessly spinning gear, and/or an error  Connection to mailbox XXX failed (where XXX always equals the email address for the LAST forum in my list of forums)

HELP! I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks,

Melissa

may need Andy's help here as he wrote the plugin...

but need to make sure you know the settings for the email accounts - that is critical...

so assume you have created a unique email address for each forum? and I think they will all require the same password for access... and entered the full email address on each forum settings panel (forum - forums - manage groups and forums)?

then on forum - options - settings... you need to know the access info...

for example, I am used to gmail being port 993...but it can vary... you should be able to get this info from google account... I also think gmail needs both ssl and tls checked, but not positive... the password entered, needs to be the password for the email account, not necessarily the google apps account (but they could be the same)...

on the options panel, in the red box, what does it say about IMAP?

Yes, I created a unique email address for each forum (using the forum slug for each forum as the first half, followed by @domain.com for the second half). All of these email addresses are functioning fine.

Yes, they each use the same password.

Yes, I entered the full email address on each forum settings panel.

The password for the email account IS the password for the google apps account -- there's only one password.

In the red box it says this:
Your PHP installation includes the IMAP library which allows post-by-email to try and retrieve email attachments from users who are allowed to upload them

so that leaves finding out the true port - did you try 993 - at least for imap.gmail.com?

and same for the tls and ssl options...

if so, then will need Andy to stop by... I have been replying via email and we have fair number of users using it, so just need to get the settings right, I think... but must admit, not sure anyone who has passed on their experience is using gmail - most use the email server on their domain...

also, worth noting that the checking for email is periodic... you specify the interval in the options too... by default its 1 hour... so it could take up to 1 hour after sending the email before it shows up...

but if you cannot verify the settings, its not likely a time issue, but a configuration...

So far no luck using port 993. Am trying with TLS off/on and SSL off/on and all variations thereof. (Assuming that's what you mean by "same for the tls and ssl options"??????)

To clarify, I'm not using gmail. I'm using Google Apps for business to host my email -- it's not a gmail account, it's username@domainname.com, NOT username@gmail.com

Hope that makes sense.

(It's the exact same thing I have set up for several other email addresses inside GoDaddy, and formerly had set up inside BlueHost.com. After I switched to Synthesis web hosting, however, I had to change how my email was hosted, because Synthesis web hosting does not support email.)

The Test Mail Server Connection seems to spin forever before it ultimately gives me the error message, btw.

Yes, I set the "check for new email interval" to 300 seconds to try and help troubleshoot more quickly. Would that cause this problem????

no, would not be a cause...

if this is your domain, then you should be able to quickly determine what your port is and whether tls/ssl is needed... or ask your host... do you retrieve email from this same server using a email client? should be able to get from there then too...

but as I said, starting to exhaust my knowledge of the plugin... perhaps Andy will have some more ideas...

I've tried all permutations that are shown in the Google Apps for Business configuration instructions. None are working.

Here's from the Google Apps for Business configuration page:

Standard configuration instructions:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS or SSL: smtp.gmail.com
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465
Server timeouts Greater than 1 minute, we recommend 5
Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
Account Name or User Name: your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Email Address: your email address (username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com)
Password: your Gmail password
