we want it to work too! hate to say this again, but several hundred downloads of this plugin working fine... so gain, have to figure out what is going on locally...
not sure what you mean by:
My understanding is that you do NOT have to use the slug of the forum as the first half of the email address -- please confirm.
which email address are you talking about? the server address (which is what follows) or the actual email address of the specific forum (remember one address per forum)... For the former, you will need some-address@domain.com... some-address can be what ever you want... it does not need to match the forum slug... it must be unique though for each forum...
993 is an odd port number... thought google was the only one who used that... but could be wrong...
I assume you have configured an email client on your desktop using the mail server and account info and can successfully retrieve email? not on web site, but on your desktop using a client... that is best way to make sure the config info is correct...
If you have a desktop client retrieving mail properly, then the next step is probably going to see if you can supply us with some site credentials and ftp credentials to try to debug... but really, I need to let Andy answer the next step since he does the work on that plugin...

Thanks for your reply, Mr Papa.
NEWSFLASH! I was finally able to get a post reply by email!!!!
Here are the settings that worked:
Name of Mail Server: pop.secureserver.net
Port: 995
Password: the password
Use TLS: OFF
Use SSL: ON
Check for new email interval: 300
There's just one problem: it posted my email post TWICE. Any idea why that might have happened?
The next step is to retry using the multitude of Google Apps email addresses I created specifically for this purpose... I'm sure I tried using pop.gmail.com, but that didn't work before. Maybe the port needs to be something other than 993 for gmail..????
Thanks,
Melissa
Well, Simple:Press and Google Apps email do not seem to play nice. VERY frustrating, as it is a much less expensive way to create a new email address for every forum than to go through someplace like GoDaddy...
Once again, since swapping out the GoDaddy-hosted email address for the Google Apps-hosted address, I'm getting the perpetually spinning gear when I try to test mail server connection.
Settings I've tried:
Name of Mail Server: gmail.com, pop.gmail.com, imap.gmail.com (tried all of them)
Port: 995 and 993 (tried both)
Password is correct. SSL is ON, TLS is OFF.
I do no understand why this won't work!
I think that Steve hit the nail on the head above. if you can set up an email client on your PC exactly the same credentials should work with PBE. I think I said this same thing somewhere above but have not checked. For this rather odd gMail account there is little point in trying anything other than the 'pop' address as this is email we are talking about. The port is whatever the service tells you it is.
As I have also said a couple of times now - I suspect that this failure might well have something to do with the way the email is being shunted around at google from one email domain to another. I have no experience or knowledge of what they do there.
But - try the local email client route if that works then PBE should work also.
Steve (Mr papa) uses this facility a lot on this site and we do get the odd 'double entry'. This is actually neither a WP, SP or PBE issue as such. At least I am informed of this by the documentation. The main issue seems to be with the imap prototocols on the email servers where deleting an email from code can fail for no known reason. Sadly php forums are full of questions on this issue. But - it shouldn't happen often.

I finally just gave up on Google Apps and bought a slew of extra email addresses on my GoDaddy email account. It's now working great!
The only problems so far:
- The first reply post duplicated itself (same post showed up twice)
- A member's post included some odd characters, something like =C2 =A0 or similar
- When I tried installing the Mentions plugin, the TinyMCE disappeared and the text edit box is unclickable -- just a white box, cannot get any type inside it. This is a separate problem, so will post it elsewhere.
Thanks for all your help with this! Turns out that gmail server was the culprit. 8-P
Question: Do you know if Mentions work in post-by-email posts? (Assuming I can get that plugin working at all, that is... )
mentions should work in post by email... must say, I have not tested it though... the difference is that for using via PBE, is you would want to make sure you have @usernicename and not the display name... the latter can have spaces and other characters that make it very difficult to parse with regex...
so when you use mentions normally, you start by entering a display name, but we convert it to the usernice name for you... and then on display, we convert it to the link... so yeah, should work via PBE, just use the nicename...

No its not... but will be similar... the user login can contain spaces... a user nicename will not... any special chars, spaces, etc in the user login will be stripped to form the user nicename by wp...

Okay, so then I guess my real question is, is there a way for people to know their own and other people's usernicename?
Since I'm currently using WL Tags plugin, my members have learned to tag people by the names they used when they signed up. What do I tell them to do if I switch to your Mentions plugin? (Tagging isn't very effective if you don't know the name to use to do it!)
I thought I could tell members to put their usernicename in their signature.... Though that won't show up in a post received by email, so doesn't really solve the problem. It would be useful inside the forums at least, but I need to know how to tell people how to determine their usernicename first...
Thanks!

unless you have lots of users with the same user logins, you can still tell people to use that... the mentions plugin will give you a list of users that match the name as you type it... so after 1 char it gives you list of names that match... each character you type, it will narrow down the list to only those that match... wont take many characters to end up with a very small list...
still think you are confused by user nice name... maybe an example will help...
lets say your user login is 'A Creative Life'... user user nicename will be 'a-creative-life'... pretty dang close... and if you type a bit more slowly and let the auto complete help, you wont have to make many hard decisions on which user you want...
