How would you change the "Select Topic Status" text to something else without changing core files?
Or would it be easier for me to just create a copy of the plugin, rename it and modify it?

This is one of those difficult ones where we, perhaps, don't quite yet have an easy mechanism to expose those labels. This is something I have raised for discussion with a view to the next major update as there are a few of these buried away.

If you want to give me a couple of days I can see if we can design a sensible way to do this and then we could make this the guinea pig. Otherwise you option would be an alternative of course.
