Support Forum
Hi. I've just downgraded a troublemaker to guest status because I didn't want him to be able to post, edit or delete any forum messages. I don't want to delete the account altogether at this stage.
However, I can't work out how to disable PMs for guests. I couldn't see an option in Manage Permission Sets. Shouldn't administrators have that option?
I know there's a way to limit PMs to people within the same usergroup but that's not what I want here. If it's not possible to control who can PM, could the functionality be added to a future release?
Users classed as 'guests' can not use PM as you need an active user account to do so. It might depened on how you made tyhis person a 'Guest' of course.
By the way - did you see that we updated the AutoLink plugin the other day - just for you really! See: https://simple-press.com/blog/

I made the user a guest by going to Manage User Groups then going to Manage Users/Add New under the Guests usergroup. It seems to have disabled his posting rights but not stopped him from sending PMs.
However, I did just notice the "Can use the Private Messaging system" toggle in Manage Permission Sets. I must have overlooked that option before.
So I think I'm getting confused with User Groups and Permission Sets. I have a permission set Read Only Access. How can I associate the Guests user group with those permissions? I had a look in the Codex but couldn't see how it's done.
Regarding the AutoLink plugin, I did see the update, and I've just started using the plugin on my site, but I'm confused by your message! I don't think I've ever asked for any enhancements.
Don't worry! I've found out. Instead of Add New in Manage Users, I should have used Delete/Move Members. That's a bit confusing...
You combine user groups with permissions at the forum level. So go to manage forums where you will see buttons on the right to add a permission. You wil likely already have th defgault Guests user group in there so see what ot matches up to.
As to Auto-Linking - was it not you that said you had to put the word 'beatles' in several times using caps, lower case etc., just to pick up all of the variations that posters use? Perhaps it was someone else....

We posted at the dame time clearly.
Well Add New does just that. Adds a new member to a user group. Don't forget that depending on how you have things set up members might be in more than one user group so there is a big difference between adding a member and moving a member.

I didn't realise users could be in more than one group. I thought if I added a person to one group it would remove them from whichever group they were previously in. But I've got it now. Thanks also for explaining how the permissions work at forum level. My forum's been running since 2008 and I don't think I've really changed permissions since it was initially set up!

I don't think it was me, no. But it's definitely useful. On my Beatles site I can have Yesterday, Birthday etc linked to articles on those songs, but not the lower case versions. So thanks for the option, and for all your help.
forum admin > user Groups > Map users to user groups: Here you can specify whether userss should be allowed in more than one group or not. If in doubt always best to say no.
And sorry for the confusion. You are quite right - it was another Beatles fan utilising auto-linking!
