OP issue was improper loading of js - not using the wp api causing multiple versions to be loaded...
in your case, your wp theme or other is loading a jquery ui version from google api labs improperly instead of using the version that ships with wp... additionally, wp is the loading its own version and its a different version than wp uses/ships... the two are likley conflicting...
better if the theme or plugin just used the version that wp ships...

That doesn't sound as if it is going to be easy to find. Do you suggest I try deactivating wp plugins and theme until it works?work

first thing I would try is a temp switch to the default wp theme and see if things work... might quickly isolate it...
then, yes disable all other plugins and see if working... if so, then re-enable them one by one until it breaks...
we might be able to help with small change to the offender when we know which one...

You're a genius. I suspected the Mingle Social Network plugin and was right first hit. Taken it out and all works fantastic now thanks to your help.
That plugin is a piece of crap anyway so don't bother investigating - I'm going to take a look at your plugin.
