Hello.
I am trying to change the forum icons to my own, but having trouble with it not displaying at all. In particular I wish to update only this icon.
/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/default/images/sp_groupicon.png or .jif
tried replacing these with my own and they are of similar size, and not working? Am I missing something here? Do they have to be exactly the same size or smaller then the originals?

the image you reference is the group icon, not the forum...
why dont you just use the sp api for replacing the group/forum icons? we provide a form for uploading them and then you can use them as the icon without modifying the theme.. see forum - manage groups and forums - custom icons... then edit the group/forum you want to change and tell it to use the icon... this allows a different icon for each forum...
but if you want to change it in the theme, the proper file name is sp_GroupIcon.png... if you want to replace it, you must name it exactly the same... if you want to change the name, you will have to use the same one for each group... and you can tell us the new icon name as an argument to the template tag sp_GroupHeaderIcon() in your group view template file in the sp theme...
