It took me two hours to resolve this error; however, persistence paid off and I am now happy. Uploading plugins and I kept getting a 503 error from my server. I tried Dreamweaver and Filezilla as my ftp client; however both did not work.
Solution: rename the plugin folder to wp-content/plugin. Make sure to correct your path in storage locations.

Are you referring to SP plugins?
Yes! The name of the folder does not matter ...it's the path that makes the difference. I can name the plugin folder xyz; however, for "some" strange reason the sp-resources folder did not allow me to add plugins. I know how to add permission etc; however, I'm not sure why access was denied.
check the owner... some php setups on servers dont create the directory as the web user...
