Intermittent issues - with only some members

I am having odd issues with my SPF Version 5.2.6 (the latest version and all forum related plugins are also up to date). This forum is a private membership form that is integrated to work with Wishlist Member.

Some members are unable to do various activities on the forum, for example:

  • For some, the quote button doesn't work properly, they click to Quote within a thread on the forum, and either it does not list the name of the person they are quoting, and/or the cursor is at the beginning of the quote, and below the quote - which also means that the quote itself isn't going to be in the blue shaded "bubble" that makes it stand out as a quote.
  • For others, if they go to their own profile, and click the Permissions tab, and then the View button under one of the sections listed, to get details on what their permissions are/aren't - nothing happens when they click the View button.
  • At other times, these same folks listed above, sometimes they see the PM button, or the Quote button, and other times it's not visible to them.

At this point, there are two main people we are working with to track down the above mentioned issues and to try to find a resolution.  There are many others who recently left the forum altogether, probably too frustrated to stick around to find a solution.

To further add mystery to this situation, one person on my Team, as well as another development firm I hired, can login as these same folks (using the username/password credentials of the members in question); using the IE9 browser they do, and not have the same issues at all!  This person on my Team also used Chrome, Firefox and Safari to test, and did not have these issues - but I personally, on my own computer, DO have the same issues as my forum members mentioned above.

So my question is:  could there be something missing/wrong on the computers/browsers of those few of us having these issues?  Why are some able to browse my forum without issues, and others are not?

Does SPF require the very latest versions of browsers to work properly? Does it require other specific browser and/or computer minimum recommendations on software, service packs, java or something in order to work properly with SPF?

It's a mystery when two people, both using IE9, get different results on the forum.  Something somewhere isn't right - and we can't seem to trace down the root of the problem.  Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

FYI: I have the following plugins activated:

Editor TinyMCE Rich Text

Well... curious indeed.

Now I will have to say right up front that I am NOT an IE user as I use a Mac and Steve (Mr Papa) who would normally field IE related questions is on vacation. So you are stuck with me at the moment.

I can answer the question regarding versions etc., and the answer is we do not support (like WP) IE6 and IE7. We would like to drop IE8 as well and will as soon as we are able. But IE9 and IE10 should work fine.

I seem to remember a discussion on the forum a few months back - and bear with me here as I may be completely wrong about this - where a user mentioned that a cpuple of their users were having oddball problems and they found out that they had their IE set in some sort of backward compatibility mode - i.e. it was IE9 running as IE6 or IE7. When set to send the correct user agent it behaved itself. Again - I may be wrong about this but it is worth a look and might be a good place to start investigations. But no - afraid I don't know where to look for that in the IE options.
