Yes, there were other plugin updates, but not all on the same day and with testing in between. The SP blog linking plugin was done on a separate day along with SP tinymce. The odd thing was that it again made the selection menu disappear. The "-1" thing definitely has to be some other plugin and I won't know the culprit until I find it with the disable plugins procedure.
update: Interesting, I shut off every single plugin except simple-press and also shut off all sp plugins except sp-blog-linking and the "-1" comments still appears when I link a post to the forum. How can that happen with absolutely only simple press and sp blog linking activated if sp doesn't do anything with the comments bubble in the posts list?
I have no idea. However, the comment count is held in the wp posts table so once it has been set to a value it wont be changed just by deactivating plugins and functions.
The last update to blog linking - the first for quite some time - made no structural, operational or functional changes whatsoever to the plugin. The ONLY change to the code was that a users IP address was set to a default of 0.0.0.0 if it could not be determined. That change can have no possible effect on the drop down in the WP create post page or anywhere else except for the saving of a topic and post to the forum tables.

crazy, it shows "-1" in the admin section list of posts page (like in the pic I attached) but it shows 0 in MySQL wp_posts. I'm thinking I'm just going to give up on blog linking, it's not essential for what we're doing. I would haved like to have it as we did use it in the past but the root of this problem is becoming impossible to track down. Would you recommend trying a reinstall of simple-press?
I don't see any point or profit in re-installing assuming things are working OK - which you have not said is the case.
If I have some time today, I will try and look at the WP code to see what they do to display the comment count on the post index list. If I find anything usful I will add to this thread.

Yes, the forum does seem to be working okay (will continue testing though). The exception is blog linking not working and that's tested with no other plugins active at all other than only SP and SP-blog-linking. Well, I'll just keep at it as time allows and look for any other clues I may have missed. Thank you for your help. I'll be interested if you find anything and I'll do the same if I find any more clues.
well, glad everything else is working... we are quite mystified as to what might be causing your blog linking... it is a singular issue that has not affected anyone else...
but as Andy says, will try to research a few things...

So far, something I've found is that if you do an import into WP there is supposedly a comments count bug that can occur. I have imported data so that may be the source of this issue. The site is a new development (improved more features faster server etc) of a current site and the posts were imported from it.
BUT
When I create a post it has an initial comment count of "0" like it's supposed to and it's not until I link to forum that it adds the "-1". I'm considering a hack that sets the initial comment count at 1 or 2 when a post is created and then when I blog post link it to sp will reduce the count by -1 to become 0 or 1 and then it should work. I just don't know where to add this code yet.
I have also tried commenting and then deleting that comment as a work around and that did work.
I really am totally unable to replicate this in any shape or form. we also use linking on this site for some of the blog posts and they are also fine.
What about other plugins? Do you have any installed and active that add content or manipulate the blog post and related data in any way? Any that add fields to the write/edit post panel for example?
