Hi

I've received a message from one of my forum members saying "I am a new member.  I'm having trouble with the site. When I post the reply to a post on the forum, it asks me to do some addition, however it doesn't let me put the answer in the box. I'm trying to contact a member named April who posted in 2013. Help?"

I have also noticed that the presentation of the form is not as it should be, the theme does not seem to be working properly (see screenshot attached).

Thank you for your assistance

Lloyd

FYI: I have updated to version 5.5.8 Build: 13000 and I have updated the forum permalinks.

Screenshot? Or perhaps a link to your forum page would help?
And when you say you have updated - updated from which version> And - have you also updated all other components (forum theme, plugins etc)?

Here is a link to the forum page http://www.electricsense.com/forum/. I don't recall what version I updated from but as far as I know it was the next most recent version - I update every week to 10 days.

I tried to update the theme from Default 1.2.10 to 1.2.16 but got this message "An error occurred while updating"

and I got the same message when I tried to update:
"Language and Theme Selection
You have version 1.2.5 installed. Update to 1.3.3. Requires SP Version 5.5.7.

Subscriptions
You have version 1.4.6 installed. Update to 1.4.11. Requires SP Version 5.5.7.
An error occurred while updating Language and Theme Selection: The plugin is at the latest version
Updating Plugin Subscriptions (2/2)
An error occurred while updating Subscriptions: The plugin is at the latest version"

Please advise.

wp actually does the updating of those plugins, not simple press... does it give any more info?  think there is a clickable more details link?  guessing the permissions on the directory/files for the plugins is such that wp cannot delete them (likely wp-content sp-resources)...

you can always download the latest version of the sp plugins from our download page and manually update via ftp to get the latest active if the wp update is not working...

of course, as guests, we cannot try posting.. but I am seeing several displays issues from an outdated sp theme, so we should get everything updated before proceeding...

Can you clarify on where "there is a clickable more details link"? When I try and update my theme I just get an error message (see screenshot)

You said "you can always download the latest version of the sp plugins from our download page and manually update via ftp to get the latest active if the wp update is not working…" do I need to update the sp theme before I update the sp plugins?

If you download from the site here and then FTP to replace plugins and themes then it doesn't really matter what sequence you do things in but always best to do them all at the same time. And do replace existing ones. Do not try renaming the folders.

I am not sure where the more details link is myself actually and until I perform another update I wont be able to find out - although find out I will! Hopefully Mr Papa will answer here before then.

I tend to agree though that the most likely cause is WP being unable to delete the old plugin before copying in the updated version. And that would most likely come down to permissions on the folders.

I use Cyberduck for FTP stuff but I've never replaced a plugin or theme with it. Do you have resource which explains step by step how I can do this?

Basically:

  1. Download the relevant plugin from our download pages to your local PC which will deliver a ZIP file.
  2. Unzip the plugin file to reveal the plugin folder.
  3. Open Cyberduck and navigate to the Simple:Press forum-plugins location - by default wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins.
  4. The plugin you are replacing you should now see in the list.
  5. Pick up the new plugin folder you downloaded and drag it to the above storage location (step 3). Cyberduck will ask you if you want to overwrite the exiting folder. Answer yes and let it go.

I've updated the theme, per your instructions. And the theme now looks 'normal' here http://www.electricsense.com/forum/ But when I look in wp-content/sp-resources/themes the theme is showing a last modified date of Nov 5 2014 but when I look at this folder in my PC it's dated 2015. How can I be sure it's the latest version?

I tried to overwrite the user-selection plugin but it won't overwrite because the plugin downloaded is called user-selection 2. I've got the same problem with the subscriptions plugin. How I can update these?

This can happen if WordPress has tried to install plugins but failed. No plugins should have a number on the end so just rename the folder. Remove any number and/or trailing space on the end.

If a WP update fails then it often can rename the folder '-1 and then '-2' etc which can cause havoc. Simply rename to remove this. And look using Cyberduck at the existing plugin folders and make sure none of them have the same problem. And again if they do - rename through Cyberduck.
