I've updated the theme and the 2 plugins successfully - thanks for your guidance on this.
My only question is (per my previous comment):
I’ve updated the theme, per your instructions. And the theme now looks ‘normal’ here http://www.electricsense.com/forum/ But when I look in wp-content/sp-resources/themes the theme is showing a last modified date of Nov 5 2014 but when I look at this folder in my PC it’s dated 2015. How can I be sure it’s the latest version? (see screenshot attached)

I'm not seeing any attached screenshot, but you can always double check the latest version of the theme from either the admin menu (forum > themes > available themes) where Default for example will have a version number, or the file spTheme.txt (sp-resources > forum-themes > default > spTheme.txt) which also holds the version number.
The version numbers you have can be checked against the version numbers listed on our Member Themes downloads page, or our Free Themes downloads page which includes Default.
