Support Forum
Hi Guys,
My site is http://locostmarketing.com
I clicked on the button to upgrade to the latest version of Simple Press, but the plugin did not activate properly and gave me the following error message:
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error)
This error caused the whole back end of the site to be not accesible, although the site was still functioning properly on the front end (not sure if the forum page was working)
I have since deleted the plugin via FTP, and have put it back ready to be activated. I have now have access to the back end, but after repeating this many times I still get the error above when trying to activate the plugin.
Does anybody have any idea why I can't activate the plugin, or how I can fix it?

So far, with many hundreds of upgrades, no other issue like this...
you used the wp updater for the plugin?
500 internal server error usually means some sort of configuration issue - such as permissions or out of php memory... due to server permissions, WP may be having issues removing the old plugin before doing the update... when it fails, what does the simple-press plugins folder look like? ie does it have files? correct ones?
can you check the server error logs and see if more info is available?
what happens if you download the plugin from our download page and then FTP the plugin up to your server?

Hi Mr Papa,
I have since realised that the issue is not just around the Simple Press plugin, but a group of about 10 other plugins as well. 75% of the plugins on my site are not affected, but the other 25% are which includes Simple Press.
Are you able to tell me where I can find the server error logs? I have no idea where to look for these.
Downloading the plugin from your download page, and then uploading via FTP makes no difference.
It looks like I will need to hire a professional to fix the problem.

There is, sadly, no single location for php error logs. It depends where the hosting company defined them to be!
But - most hosting control panels (like cPanel) will have a link to them and will allow you to look at them through their UI.
if you are seeing a lot of 500 internal server errors then raising this with your host would be a good idea. They should be able to diagnose things and track down the cause.
