If it helps anyone else - i.e. the conflict between "Simple Press" and "The Events Calendar" I commented out the folowing lines in the file   ..../the-events-calendar/lib/template-tags-deprecated.php  and it works fine!

//            function sp_get_option($optionName, $default = '') {

//                            _deprecated_function( __FUNCTION__, '2.0', 'tribe_get_option()' );

//                            return tribe_get_option($optionName, $default);

//            }
