I was thinking that a plugin that would give simple control to resize forum image, file, and media uploads would be very practical and beneficial. Is that something that could be done?

The only way I know to resize the forum images is to do it manually on my computer and replace them using an FTP application.

Images should be resized automatically depending upon your settings for file uploads. Go to the forum admin > components > file uploads - and see the popup help for details.

What I'm referring to is the size of the files taking space on our server, not the size of the image showing up on the post. I can't find a setting for resizing the images, only to set a maximum upload size on the various files.

its right there on forum - components - file uploads...  you can set max file size and you can set the image quality which will reduce file size as well...  you can also set max width and height which again will reduce the file size...

if you want to individually, on a picture by picture basis set a specific width and height, that is far beyond the scope of a file uploader... it pretty much becomes image editing software...  who would be able to operate this software? an user uploading or just admins?

seems like an edge case and not something folks have been requesting...  this is first one I can remember...  that said, there are probably some js libraries out there that could probably do it - not sure how it would integrate with the file uploader, but might be possible...  we do offer a custom plugin service if you are really interested in realizing such a plugin...

I thought that the max file size would keep a person from uploading a large file, not that it would resize it. So if I set the max width and height to 800 pixels the user can upload any size picture they like? That is great. I'll change that and test it. I remember in the past users told me that they were not able to upload their pictures and I had to ask them to resize. That is when I changed to 0 (unlimited).

Certainly not something that I was asking for or would even want. LOL

I was just checking. In my mind, I could imagine a software that would be able to resize the images upon upload to save server space.

I noticed in just one of my users upload folder that she had uploaded 30 pictures in one day at 3-4 MB's a piece. What I did to minimize those photos is open the folder with my FTP application, downloaded and resized them, and replaced the photos with the resized photos. I would love to be able to run an application that would do all that for me automatically. 🙂

Adobe Photo Elements allows for batching and that can include just giving a folder name. But I am not sure if it would take into account images smaller than the max. It would be a tragedy if it tried to scale them up!
