okay... that is just interesting... I can find zero benefit in caching the admin pages... but as I said, appreciate the info... more to go on and new questions for the occasional upgrade issues...

Just had the same problem, running WordPress 3.9.1, SP Version 5.4.2, three SP plugin updates notified, when run the updater says 'error, plugins at the latest version' but still notifies updates needed.
De-activated W3 Total Cache and update works perfectly.
Re-activated W3 Total Cache and all plugins reported up to date.
yeah, for some reason, on some installs, the caching plugins are inserting its advertising comment for itself into the ajax response... it normally outputs the advertising comment at the end of each page, so its likely being to greedy and corrupting the ajax response too... really sloppy when its doing it in the admin too...
