I have one test site where its 2400px wide... 
but what might help is if you could create us a temp user account so we could log in and inspect the CSS directly... if that works, send a pm to yellow swordfish, mr papa and brandonC with the account details... please link to this topic too so we know what it is about...
worst case, we should be able to give you the css changes to make it work locally...

What theme is used here on SP btw? I can't find the theme with those "look alike" speech balloons next to the avatar. I would like to get the same environment while testing.

This is a very customized theme just for this site... too many tweaks and beneath the hood changes to package up and release...
but if you search the forum here, we have walked a few users through how to do the speech bubble type thing... away from computer at moment and answering via email, so cannot search myself... but will later if you cannot find them...
