so its an object cache? ala eacclerator and apc? and works with wp and sp?

It's a reverse (caching) proxy so it's more like squid, i'm using APC already and even have W3TC in place within WP.
As both WP and (therefor?) SP use a lot of cookies varnish won't do much to them thinking it can't cache such objects, but it will do miracles for stylesheets and images and such (but you will need to purge when updating obviously).
It's not for the faint of hearth though but seems to work reasonably for a couple of sites we run - although it needs per-site (and sometimes per package like drupal and wp) configuration to be fully optimized.
When you visited the site Varnish->Apache->PHP->APC->Wordpress->W3TC->SP where all doing there best to work together 🙂
yeah, got it - thanks. just looked at the docs
