so you are running wp multisite??? certainly appears so... I assume that all the posts you want are from the forum on the main site and not from one of the network sites?

Not totally sure where @mr-papa was going with that so I will leave him to chime in if relevant. Personally I I am having some difficulty working out what could cause your problem., As I say - this is an old widget and tag that has been around for some time without any issues currently on the books except yours.
The only thing that seems to be different here is the repeated use of the widget. I doubt this is an issue but I am wondering if there might be an internal cache conflict of some sort. Would it be possible for you to temporarily remove the duplicate widgets so that just the one is left to see if it behaves on its own? So that at least we can potentially remove that from the equation...

was just making sure since you were running multisite that you werent trying to aggregate forum posts from different forums on network sites into a single list... but you say no, so no further thoughts there...

As suggested, I have removed other instances of the widget on the homepage so there is only one that is active now.
However, this doesn't seem to have had any effect and posts are still not being updated.
If, as it appears, that the problem may not lie with the widget or plugin itself, so I will disable all other site plugins and see if it starts to function properly again.
In the meantime, if anyone has further ideas or suggestions, I would gratefully like to hear them.
Well, I have deactivated all the plugins on the root/main site, except for the Simple Press plugin, as well as all the network plugins, except for 3 essential plugins which I cannot turn off but think they won't interfere with the widget operation.
After refreshing the homepage a few times as well as adding test replies to forum topics, the homepage forum widget is still not refreshing and displaying the new replies.
I am really at a loss now what to do next, as I appear to have done everything possible to eliminate interference with the Simple Press plugin and widget.
The one last thing to look for would be an actual error. Again - seems very unlikely as this works just fine for literally everyone else but we should look.
Please go to the forum admin > toolbox > error log and scroll down to the bottom of any listing and clear the log. Then run a page with the widget in it and then revisit the error log (reload page) to see if anything is reported. Only interested in actual errors here...

Thank you for this suggestion.
I emptied the error log and refreshed my homepage which has the widget. After refreshing the toolbox error log, I see the following message:
Prior to emptying the error log, I noticed there were error messages or "Notices" concerning the Recent Posts widget. Please look at the screenshot below:
I hope these error messages can shed some light for you as to why the widget is not working.
Afraid I remain at a complete and total loss. These are just notices. They have no impact on the result although they do, curiously, suggest that the widget options you set up had not been saved which is a bit of another puzzle because without saving them how could it display anything!
There is also a suggestion that for some reason not all of the default values around the system have been pre-filled. The only time I have seen this before has been when someone installed SP and then deleted it instead of uninstalling it and then re-installed again later. I assume this is not the case here. But again - it would have no impact on the data returned for filling the widget.
I throw it open... has anyone else got any ideas we have not looked at
