As far as I understood, they are using it as a sort of email notification in their email client. No need to log into our site and they are always up-to-date what's going on on their PM account. Most of our users use RSS feeds in a similar way for wordpress and SP posts. Thus they are able to keep all incoming notifications from our site in one place - their favourite email client - and use the next opportunity to log in and reply.

The look could be very similar to the RSS buttons for forum posts except that only one button is needed - for all incoming PMs to the specific user.

Yes, they simply could exchange their email adresses - but some of them do not want to share those to other users - for what reason ever.

Oh yes, sorry,  I did not see it in the options panel - I eventually should change my German translation. My current translation is a little misleading on this.
