PS - just noticed your question:
have you told w3tc to ignore the forum page for ALL types of caching in use?
I looked inside W3Total Cache, and this is what is inside the field for "Never cache the following pages:"
wp-.*\.php
index\.php
So apparently W3TC is not being told to ignore the forum page, but I'm not sure what to type in that field to tell it to do so. Do you have any idea? It doesn't look like putting the URL of the forum page will be correct... (And this plugin is notoriously opaque for non-techies like me to try and use correctly!!!)
I had to break one of my own strict rules to help answer this by activating JetPack. Afraid this plugin causes nothing but problems for many other plugins so I keep it inactive at all times!. The 'After the Deadline' component is part of the Spelling/Grammar section.
As to W3TC I have never used that either - I am afraid I'm totally unconvinced that the extra overhead is worth it - but as far as I am aware just putting the forum slug into each exclusion area is enough. So - assuming your forum page slug is the default then '/forum' should do it (without the quotes of course). Maybe someone can conform that for me...

the issue with w3tc is the number of different caching options it has... each type of cache has its own tab or admin page... you must put the exclusion on each page of caching type you are using... there is not a global exclusion...

I tried adding /forum to the "never cache the following pages" field in W3TC.
I tried deactivating the Spelling/Grammar section of Jet Pack.
Neither made any difference.
I've also already tried deactivating W3TC and Jet Pack completely before, and just tried again, and nothing.
I am totally at a loss here.
Ok - let's recap...
The changes to the wp-cache - adding the forum page as an exclusion has to stay there.
We believe there may be issues with that Jetpack component and with WishList Tags plugin. The problem is that it could be none, either or both so trying, for example, to switch wp-theme without deactivating these plugins might still produce the same result. It really needs to be all at once.
There is something else I would like you to try and that is turning off (for testing) the wp-wall thingy. I don't know if you are aware but it is very, very resource hungry and is polling the server and grabbing quite a bit of data every 4-5 seconds. Now this should not really effect the editor loading but it is worth discounting it as a source of the issue.

I also want to revisit something I asked in post 2 or 3... you said it stopped working after upgrade to 5.2.2... what version of sp was it working in? and what version of wp are you using?

I also have experienced this issue. I'm trying the upgrade on another site locally first, and received this error. I seem to remember there being an error in my previous attempt to update.
This site is using WordPress 3.4.2, and Simple Press Version 5.1.4, Tiny MCE version Version 1.2
Fatal error: Call to undefined function sp_tinymce_do_upgrade() in S:\localsites\gaiansoulgrove\seasonalpractices\wp-content\sp-resources\forum-plugins\tinymce-richtext\sp-tinymce-plugin.php on line 88
When I received the error previously, I deleted the plugin and reinstalled it manually. However I'm wondering if this could somehow be the issue. I don't see anything on line 88 that is wrong, however I'm not a php expert. I just wanted to add this bit before going further, so I would remember it
Off to try a reinstall of the plugin...
I have disabled all other plugins. TinyMCE is not working, here is a screenshot of the settings before:
http://screencast.com/t/WrKbsy5LClhP
And after:
http://screencast.com/t/9IAhnocy
Once I removed the wltags in the plugs in the settings, it showed up.
http://screencast.com/t/3bVub4CjS
So it looks like it could be a wltags issue...
I've now activated WL & the WL Social Login, and it's still working.
All additional plugins reactivated and it's still working...
Deleted the wltags folder, and reinstalled, and it's not working here are the settings in TinyMCE after that
http://screencast.com/t/IcDRdSrPk
After deactivating wltags it's still not working, even if I remove the ,wltags from TinyMCE
unfortunately wishlist tags has caused many problems with simple press.. we worked with the author a while back on fixes but he still hasnt incorporated them... rather disappointing...
and now with tinymce, they are incorrectly adding things to tinymce... too many authors assume the only place tinymce will show up is in the wp admin for writing a blog post... the wp devs wrapped an api around the wp editor so it could be used anywhere but folks ignore how the api works...
