I am just wondering how these plugins differ in functionality? Does it make sense to have both or just one of them?

when you subscribe to a topic, you are notified of all new posts to that topic...

when you watch a topic, you are really just flagging the topic as something you want to come back to or want to watch...  there are no notifications...  additionally, admins can set a watch on a topic for other admins in order to indicate to the other admin they need to look at that topic...

Hi, I've just recently set up an SP forum and I'm still learning what the capabilities are.

1)  Is it possible to watch a forum or group instead of a topic?  So that you are notified of any new posts in any topic within that forum or group (including new ones that are created)?

2)  Is it possible to auto-subscribe everyone to a specific topic?

Thanks,
David

That's a no and, er, a no. Sorry. I am not doing too well here !

There is a lot of discussion that has been going on about subscriptions and how we perhaps need to widen the scope and I think I can safely say that something will happen. The main concern really is the number of potential emails a user would be letting themselves in for sending out. It can tie up server resources and, in many cases, annoy hosts but I also guess that at the end of the day that should not be our concern.

Of course - this would make a great plugin project if anyone wanted to take it on...

Hurm.  I had a feeling those were nos.  If/when it does happen, the solution to the "too many emails" issue would be to offer a user-set option of daily digests like yahoo and google groups. This is a must-have for us, so I probably will end up hacking something together. Not sure it would be robust enough for your plug-in section, though, since I don't really know what I'm doing. If you could point me to some good resources, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Sadly still writing up the resources and the plugin creation process will probably be last because of it being the least needed!

we have a digest on the list as well. I think we probably have just about every subscription request covered on the list to be honest! Sorry we have not got that far yet.
