The problem here is that we are talking about guests. Users without an account. There is NO new posts list or cache stored for these people as we have no way of identifying them. They have no permanent presence in the database... New and unread post lists for them are completely created at page load.

So I've been playing around on my staging server and the template tags, I download php sidebar and have been testing the different tags, every single one works perfect except for recent posts widget and recent posts tag, the recent posts today worked perfect and reset at midnight, the latest posts I added 300 to the code and it showed them all, newest topics worked perfect and updated when a new one was made and recent posts still stuck to the 55, strange

the today's posts template tag, it shows the posts for just the day
The Template Tag Todays Posts displays the posts made since midnight including multiple posts from one topic. If no posts found there is not output displayed.

here's a idea, since the todays posts tag works, is there anyway I could insert that in place of the new/recently updated topics drop down menu?

oh, I saw recent and missed today... lol, the recent and today dont really go together 
today's posts...
you cannot really replace the quicklinks with the output of the todays posts... at least not in the same format... the quicklinks require specific formatting and js applied to it...
I dont understand the 55 part at all... there is no such magic number really any magic number for the recent posts other than the number you specify to show...

I don't know, I disabled every wp and sp plugin and switched to 2014 theme trying to see if there was a conflict somewhere and it still shows the same recent threads from 3 days ago, so I removed the drop down and the display under the forum groups until I can figure something out, it makes the forum look like there is no activity when the topics are not updating

so is this occurring on your staging server too? is that web accessible? that is, can we get ftp and admin access to it to do some debugging?

the 3 year old thread has a higher last post ID then the 9 month old, all the forums are showing the same thing

not sure how that would affect it... its on page 74... we wouldnt get that deep in getting the latest... you have 73+pages of 'newer' posts...
my guess, you moved those posts from another topic into this one... is that possibe? still wouldnt affect the latest...
