Downloads from FTP show average image size of 170k.

I was. I'm just answering all of the questions asked of me to get to the answer to why images on my forum that are uploaded at 170k on average, when saved to the desktop are downsampled to 72dpi. I don't know why this is, which is why I'm reaching out to you.

You are mixing terms... One is file size and one is dpi resolution... No direct correlation between them.. Yes, more dpi will be more filesize..
We asked what the dpi of the files on your server w as, not the filesize... 170k but we asked the dpi since that is what you were questioning

Uploaded images are 150-300dpi. Saved to desktop, they are all 72dpi. Why does this happen?

I have absolutely no idea. I assume you are saving them using your browser 'right click' options. Surely it is something to do with that mechanism. If this is what you are doing then WP or SP can't have any impact.
i am curious myself as to why this should be...
