yes, just like wp theme... and not core... should be your theme (which might be a copy of ours) and it was far from perfect... the customization options were too limiting for the majority of users... you couldnt move elements around and tweak like you can with wp themes, for example... all forums essentially looked alike since they we all based on the same layout with a simple skin applied... now we have already seen some new fantastic layouts for the forum...

unfortunately, we knew the change to a theme would not appeal to all...

if you have never edited your wp theme, then you are among the lucky - or unlucky depending on your viewpoint... wink I have yet to find a theme that does everything I want without customization - and I love having that ability...

Are you saying there should be a theme specific admin panel included with the default theme? Didn't see it.

Just saying that theme specific or not, taking away the GUI from the admin is going to prevent so many people from being able to access any kinds of changes. Taking away a GUI and making people edit php is kind of like going backwards imho.

I understand what you are saying... but on the other hand, the layout with only skins was holding back so many people and ideas...  you had to live with elements where they were...  no creativity allowed...  so much more freedom, customization and creativity allowed now...

you are free to move elements where you want... and display the forum data however you want...  no way to do that with a simplistic layout and options for turning some elements on or off, but having to remain in fixed location... yes, you have to edit a file, but we had a whole bunch of folks editing core files now to get the layout the way they wanted...

keep in mind, for almost all the gui options you referred to, they mostly turned stuff on or off...  or changed a number...  everyones forum looked pretty much the same except for colors...

we know we cant please everyone on this... and we have been getting lots of complaints and requests for more freedoms - skins were to constrained...  and just like how wp themes works, its a step forward in my opinion...  we just need more than four themes for folks who are uncomfortable editing a file to choose from...

Understandable, and I sympathize with you for having to make the decision. But in the long run, it may hinder the brand overall. Afterall it is called Simple-Forum, not complicated-too-many-core-files-to-edit-now-css-is-actually-in-php-forum.

Perhaps a brilliant idea: maybe eventually offer a plugin that would allow the backend of the forum to once again be simple to configure...

That may well be possible if we could get people to join the team 🙂

the options page were far from simple and most users couldnt find the options they wanted...  we were constantly having to tell folks where to go for certain options and also telling people to edit the core code to move things around like they wanted... panels and panels of options is not simple wink

It says here to change the breadcrumbs you have to edit the code to make them a straight line.  But what about when we later upgrade Simple Press?  Do all of our changes disappear? Do we have to put the code back in there again, or is it smart enough to know?

No. for 5.0 no core editing needed... you need to edit your sp theme... in which case, you should make your own theme, copying one of ours to start if you want...

then add a tree=0 argument to the breadcrumbs template tag call...

try adding &homeLink= to your args

Dear Lee

I fixed the sphead.php which is awesome.

I am not the smartest fish in the pond so what is "args" in this content and where is it located?

Kind regards

Philip

'args' is shorthand for 'arguments' which is just another name for 'parameters'. They are the items that can be passed to a function to switch things on or off or change the display method. Each template function supports a number of 'args' that can be used to alter things - like - in this case - the breadcrumbs.
