Actually it has been really great to see you start to plunge in and make all these custom alterations. I know from my own learning curve that it can be daunting but once you make a start it gets easier and, of course, most rewarding.
I am looking forward to seeing the final, polished result.

More bother with this left justified stuff. The problem now is that the spArrowRight.png link hyperlink arrows are declared as spRight which of course puts them very close to the left margin of the next column.

Would the best way to sort this out to be right padding? Can I do it in the spForumView.php file?
By the looks of it you should add a padding right.
You are using modified Default theme right?
Look in it for
#spMainContainer .spInRowLabel a.spInRowLastPostLink img {
padding-bottom: 30px;
add
padding-right: 20px;
That should make the arrow approximately centered.
