No matter - I found it.

You need the spGroupViewDesktop.php template file (or the equivalent in a child theme).

Right down the bottom is the call

sp_RecentPostList('show=5&admins=1', __sp('Unread and recently updated topics'));

which you can see has the 'show' argument set to 5. Change the number to whatever you fancy.
