Most usually this will come down to javascript problems and more often than not (although not always of course) it will be connected to the way jQuery is loaded. This will also usually effect other SP funtions as well as other plugins.

you are not alone in hating IE... it really lags behind the other browsers - unfortunately some folks are stuck using it or just dont know there is better... IE 9 made huge strides over previous versions but still behind... IE 10 actually looks promising and hopefully can end the days of all the special logic for IE...
as Andy says, probably a js conflict of sorts... and can affect IE only because each browser has their own js engine...
