I found an old post from 2011 that dealt with this but I am curious if vertical sub forum display was ever added as an option? I want my forums arranged like default vBulletin or phpBB.
Let me clarify though..By sub forums I really mean what would normally be called the forums under each category. The view from the forum home page.

in particular, the stack template function argument will allow you to display them in vertical list vice horizontal list...
just look in your spGroupView template file of the sp theme you are using... and adjust the arguments to that function call...
as always, we recommend you have your own theme vice using one of ours to keep from losing changes on updates... see: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....g-a-theme/
just holler if you need more help... you can then style theme however you like...
