Theme will not install on Installation

Hi,

I recieve the following error on activating Simple Press:

Either the theme CSS file and/or color Overlay file from the selected theme is missing

I have tried to upload a theme but it will not accept it. I have also uninstalled Simple Press and reinstalled it without success.

I think it may have something to do with a trial a did some time ago with Simple Press but since doing it I have changed the theme and I wondering whether this has somethign to do with it.

The forum and topics I created are still there. I have dleted them but it makes no difference - I still get the error message.

I am using the Divi theme which should be fine with it.

Please could someone advise how I rectify this please ? Many thanks.

Hey Stephen,

It depends what you mean by 'changed the theme'. Have you made a custom theme in the past that is incomplete or broken in some way? If so, might be worth removing it from the themes folder via FTP then trying to activate.

If not, when you do activate Simple:Press can you access the 'Forum' admin menu, and can you then access the Forum > Themes menu to see about activating a stock theme?

This could also be down to the same WP problem that renames a folder (appends a number) when one exists it is unable to remove. If the theme folder has a '-1' (for example) at the end of the name then remove that and see if it resolves things.

Many thanks for the reply. There was no custom theme but I just changed my site to another theme that I bought.

I have tried activating the stock simple press theme but there are no themes there and when I try to upload one - I receive the error that the upload failed.

Having unistalled and reinstalled a few times and now Simple Press is not activating properly as I only get one menu item under the Forum heading in the Admin menu. I am trying to track the plugin down that may be causing the problem.

I wonder whether it is my child theme causing the problem I wonder ?

Anyway - and advice or tips to solve this would be really appreciated.

Best wishes,

Stephen

You have lost me a little here. Can we rewind back to the beginning please?

Perhaps we should start by asking what exactly DO you have installed? The first post suggests that this is not a new install because forums, topics  and posts are still available. Yet above you say you only get one entry in the admin menu (what is it?). The two statements sort of contradict each other...

As to Simple:Press themes - are you looking in the right place? By default /wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/....

I would also stop the uninstalling and re-installing whioch is doubtful to help until we know what the underlying problems are....

Sorry and I will rewind. I had a web site on a url on which I installed BBpress, some other forums and also Simple Press. I deleted them all with the exception of BBpress. I used this url for development.

I migrated the web site to another public url, installed Simple Press again and had the problem with the themes not loading. I went back to the original url, installed Simple Press which worked fine though it had the a couple of test forums I had done when I first installed it a few months back.

I am now in the state with the new url that Simple Press is not loading correctly in the admin bar. I have a small BBpress forum on the same site which I deactivated, tried Simple Press again without success. I wonder whether is a clash with BBpress perhaps ? I have looked to see whether there is theme or folder duplication and cannot find any.

If the solution is not a simple one then I will migrate the site again with the working Simple Press. It is just that have a done quite a bit of work on the new url web site.

Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Many thanks

I'm not aware of any conflicts between SP and BBpress but then again people don't tend to run both!..

How exactly did you remove Simple:Press? It needs to be uninstalled properly, not 'deleted'..

Also, as Andy requested - What exactly is the one option you're left with in the SP admin menu?

Thanks Ike for coming back - the uninstall could be where I have gone wrong.

On activating Simple Press I see the message below the plugin in red

Simple:Press is READY TO BE REMOVED. When you deactivate it ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED

Yet when I deactivate it Simple Press was not removed and so I deleted the plugin folder through ftp.

On activation all I have in my Admin Menu from Simple Press is: Forum (with no icon to the left), no menu items and on clicking Forum I get the Admin/Moderator Options and that is it.

Embarrassingly I know I have messed up and it is not the software. Any advice on taking this forward would be appreciated. Many thanks !

You should never just delete the plugin folder - Tables, folders such as 'sp-resources' and I'd imagine other things will still remain.

Might sound like a daft question, but are you using the same user account as when you installed SP originally? That is normally what you'd see viewing the forum admin as a non SP admin.

Ike and Andy - many thanks for the help but I have worked through the night to restore the site from a backup - and Simple Press is working fine now.

Thank you for your patience with me 🙂

Best wishes,

Stephen
