I've just downloaded and updated on my test site but for some reason the forum doesn't look any different even though I updated the theme and all of the plugins.
In my post I was talking about the general theme/forum layout for example:

As you can quite clearly see it's spaced out better, the Home > Forum > SubForm > Post part looks much neater and tidier aswell as using less space.
The Members Watching: 0 Subscribed: 0 Profile Log Out part looks much betting having spare buttons.
The logged in area looks much better formatted with the last visited being moving up to the top.
As for other areas of change, the actual forums have a nice table structure to the html adding a fine grey border, the posts within a forum have the same.
The Replies: x Views: x is better formatted with it all being left alighed, removing the "First Post" part ad putting it under the title of the post and then last post under the replies and views section.
The foot especially the stats section look significantly clearer.
Sorry - are you still comparing whatever theme you are using to the one we are using here? If so the one you are using seems to be just plain old 'Default' whereas this one is the up and coming 'Reboot' - due to be released in a few days time. We wanted to just leave a few days after the release of 5.5.4 when sometimes there can be a little flurry of activity. So - a few more days. We will put out a blog post on it when it happens.

Yep, it should actually cater for all phones with no tablet or desktop bleed over. The mobile version here is Reboot not a customised version of Unified..
There are only so many ways you can display the forum information sensibly on a mobile, and also the way some sections of the forum are coded for mobile (such as full profile pages) already worked well so the workload required to change them was unjustified.. So in short it's a fairly similar layout
