Well as I said above, the display name in SP is mapped during the import from the 'username' column in the phpBB users database table. So the question was how does the data look in that column? Is is all lower case for example?

OK, Username in the PHPBB DB is fine - however, the username_clean column is all lowercase. Is it possible that the import tool is using the username_clean column?
As an example...
Username, username_clean
'Kineth', 'kineth'
'Robin', 'robin'

no, not exactly...
the wp display_name is mapped from username
the wp user_login is mapped from username
the wp user_nicename is mapped from the username_clean
now I do see an error check that looks if the display_name is empty, then the user_nicename is mapped into the display_name... something in that empty check looks a bit fishy... so I will need to confer with Andy on that since he wrote the importer...
