Longtime SP User - suddenly (as an admin), I can't edit my own posts or the posts of others.

I’ve been using SimplePress for years and recently my site went down and had to be restored. Everything else has been functioning properly (as far as I know) for the past several weeks post restore.

However, after the restore I noticed that I can’t edit my own forum posts, and I can’t edit anyone else’s forum posts. Whenever I try I get the following message:

“Edit Failed, You Do Not Have Permission”.

After the error flashes I’m automatically logged out of the system and have to log back in again before I can attempt to edit or create a new blog post. While I can’t edit an existing post, I can create and delete new posts (by clicking the “Add Reply” button). But I cannot edit a new post I just created.

I also noticed that if I try to create a new post my toolbar looks fine, but if I try to edit a post my toolbar seems to be missing all the icons. Instad of B I U ... I see a bunch of squares. When looking at the console I see some CORS errors, but there shouldn't be any. Everything is being served from the same server.

The user profile I’m using is my admin profile for the site.

Here's info from my Envirionment:

Hi:

What happens if you create a new admin.  Does it work for the new admin user?

Create a new admin from within WordPress core, or from within SP?

Just to keep it clean, do both.  Create a new wpadmin and then make that new user an admin for the forums.

Ok, so I converted an existing wordpress contributor account to an admin account. Then I logged in as that account and went to the forum. There are no "edit" buttons for any posts. So apparently simply having an admin account doesn't make you a SP admin?

I'm going to have to figure out how to assing the admin role to this new admin account now. Any quick tips on how to do that? It's been a few years (literally) since I've had to monkey with user roles.

No, SP Admins can be different from WP Admins.  Go to FORUM->ADMINS to make a user an SP admin user.

Interestingly, with my new admin account I can create and edit my own replies. I wasn't able to edit my own replies with my other admin account. I have disabled all SP plugins tho, so let me go back and re-try using my other admin account. Maybe it's a SP plugin causing the issue.

Ok, turns out my new admin account can edit posts. So what does that mean? Wait, now I can edit posts using my original admin account also. Let me re-enable the SP plugins and see if the problem comes back.

I don't know - other than permissions for that admin account might have gotten corrupted during the restore process.  One thing to try is, now that you have the new admin account, remove the admin permissions for the old admin account (while logged in as the new admin) and then add it back as an admin to see if that resets its permissions properly.

Well, I wish I understood what happened, but by coincidence I had started the process to upgrade from v5x to v6x. The first step in that process is to disable all forum plugins. Then I saw your first reply come through and tried creating a new admin user, discovered that user could edit posts, and then discovered that my original admin could suddenly edit posts again.

So it turns out that by deactivating all my active plugins and reactivating them I've solved the problem.
