Quotethanks. Yes I did - and it's not blocked. I actually tried doing a manual update today and it won't go thru - I get these error messages.

So of course, no interaction with our server here. Sounds like your ftp client is having connection issues with your server?

OfflineI have found a LOT of topics on the WP forums about this issue. Admittedly - most of the mare pretty old but the symptoms are the same.
Would you be willing to try this - copied and pasted from a WP forum thread:
Download and install this plugin manually: http://wordpress.org/extend/pl.....e-control/
Once you've activated it, Load the "Core Control" settings page and activate the "HTTP Module".
Go to the new tab fore the "HTTP Module" and test cURL.
You will most likely receive the following error message "An Error has occured: name lookup timed out"
Now click the "Disable Transport" link in for cURL. You should now be able install plugins and plugin updates.
I do know it says that the plugin has not been updated recently but I have tried this myself and it does seem to be fine. Worth a try if you are willing.

OfflineI added the Plug-in Core Control but don't see Settings - just Activate and Edit. When you say manually do you mean that I have to do that through FileZilla?
OfflineIt is under the WP tools menu I believe.
Try this plugjn test first just for the record. If you DO need to use ftp in the long run I personally wouldn't use FileZilla. We have seen a lot of problems down to that in the past...
