I am guessing here - and probably guessing badly! - but it is possible, perhaps, that your server is denying access to ours to get the most up to date version information. At least, I think that scenario would explain what you are seeing.
What I need to do is consult with colleague @mr-papa who is, I am afraid, away for a few days. Let's see if he has any better ideas.
Meanwhile - just so we have the data and confirmation - please go to the forum admin > plugins - and locate the BuddyPress SP plugin and let us know what version it states there.

for some reason, all image links are broken for me...
@yellow-swordfish have user try another increase in timeout in case they have a super slow server...
