what images???  none in your post here either... did you upload using the attachments button...

but to reiterate the point I was making, see image...

users will stay in rank Rookie until they get 5 posts... then they move to someone rank... note the post column header, 'up to'...   and in this case, you will not get a membership in the first rank... dont use the first rank to control membership, use the default usergroup for members on the map users to usergroup panel...

as I said, in the forum ranks, for the rank of Newbie, turn off the auto assignment to Members...  you are forcing them there...  any members will have a rank of Newbie until they have 3 posts then they get rank of member.

Okay, I set the forum ranks as you said now. See attachment.  But new members are still not going into the "New Member" user group.  They are getting the rank of Newbie, so the forum ranks is working.  What's not working is the placement of new members into the "New Member" user group after registration, they go directly into "Member".  You can see the members are not going into the proper user group by looking at the other attachment.  And you can see from that attachment that it is in fact set as the default user group for new members.

Is there some other setting I need to do to make the new member user group assignment work properly? I'm sure it's something dumb on my part.forum-ranks-now.jpgImage Enlargerno-users-in-New-Member-group.jpgImage Enlarger

okay, look at the section below though...  you are saying all wp roles go to Members... what role are these new users getting?

yes, there can be duplication from the top and bottom - even conflicting...  but the bottom gives you finer control...  if the bottom is all the same, it should match the top part...

maybe we can add a bit of help on that...

Getting confusing.  So the top section is only correct if the bottom part agrees.  I had figured the bottom part was for current WP users only.

So, here's what I want.  Current WP users to be in the "Member" user group (which they all seem to be now), after all they've proven themselves to not be spammers.  I want new users that come aboard and register to the forum to go into the "New Member" user group.

I'm guessing that you might want me to set "Default User Group for Subscriber" to New Member. Is that correct?  If so, Maybe "Default User Group for Subscriber" should be changed to the wording "Default User Group for New Subscribers"

And if I make this setting will it move all my current users that are now in Member user group into New Member? My forum is not yet live and no of them have used the forum, but they are in fact now in the Member group -- don't wnat them moving to New Member.

(My new WP users become subscribers, as per the usual set up.)

The top part, the fieldset titled User Memberships, is for setting up new members... the bottom part, the fieldset titled Map Users, is for handling existing users...

If you have new members getting a wp role of subscriber, then yes, set default usergroup for subscriber to New Member... I ask because new members to a wp site do not necessarily get a role of subscriber... that is the default, but you can change it and many membership plugins do make it different too...

As I said, we used to have just the top part of the User Memberships but then for better integration with membership plugins, we added the mapping based on role... we probably should have figured out a way to get rid of the top part, but have not done so because of the upgrade scripts required... so it can be confusing... sorry...

If you want to map new users, then go to the Map Users section, set it up and map... It will make all users conform to the settings in the top part...

as to your wording change, cant win there... since it applies to new members and existing members if you use the Map Users stuff, we opted for the more generic...
