I just upgraded our old 4.3.5 forums - moving through 4.5.1 to 5.4.1 today.  Environment as follows:

PHP

Version: 5.4.34
Memory: 256M
Max Upload: 64M
Timeout: 300

MySQL

Version: 5.5.40
Prefix: wp_

Server

Version: Apache

WP Plugins

Akismet (3.0.3)
Email Users (4.6.10)
Fast Secure Contact Form (4.0.30)
Google XML Sitemaps (4.0.7.1)
ManageWP - Worker (3.9.30)
Ozh' Admin Drop Down Menu (3.6.9)
Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin (5.0.6)
Simple:Press (5.4.1)
TimThumb Vulnerability Scanner (1.53)
WordPress Database Backup (2.2.4)

It is a pretty simple setup - 2 groups - 14 forums - members have read only access - no moderators and a couple of admins.

(page password Income)

After the upgrade I cannot access any of the forums as an admin - I get the:

"Access denied - you do not have permission to view this page"

I tried going out and creating a new user - went through sign up fine but got the same error when trying to access any of the forums.

I then deleted all permission sets  and then reset global permissions for guests and members - but still no luck.

I've got about 900 members - I can see them in the member user group - I can see that they have read only access to each forum - but have no access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Andrew

Hey Andrew,

I am going to assume that your WP is up to date.

Have you tried removing permission sets and then manually creating?

Can you create new topics from the 'create new topic' button in the group view / forum view? i.e is it just viewing that is the problem?

I haven't any experience with this myself, but looking back at previous posts I can see that for a small handful of users permission sets were lost during older upgrades - and from what I can see it was so rare that it has been impossible to re-create the situation for tests.

In any case it mght be worth clearing out your SP error log, loading a forum page and trying to access a topic, and then checking the log to see if you are getting any errors.

A small number of users encountered this issue when upgrading from an earlier V4 version to V5 although I rather thought we had sorted this - but it might be in a later upgrade then the 5.4.1 you appear to have stopped at!

To be honest - and I apologise for this happening (we never have found out WHY it happened to a few users) - the quickest and simplest way to deal with it is to go to the forum admin > permissions > reset permissions and go for the reset. It DOES mean you need to set up the usergroup/permission relationships on your forums but it really is quicker than the alternative which requires some hands on database work.

So we really are sorry you have fallen foul of the whatever the problem is but hopefully doing this will get you up and running fairly quickly and relatively painlessly.

(Sorry Ike! You probably didn't know about this issue which was before your time and, of course I hadn't seen you had answered it!)

Thank you both for the speedy response!

I had actually reset global permissions earlier before I posted my original post but I've gone back and tried it again- although I noticed that I wasn't running the latest version - so at the same time I have upgraded to 5.5.2 from 5.4.1 (and yes Ike I'm on Wordpress 4.0;-p)

I can now access the forums as admin - hooray (not sure whether it was repeating the permission reset or the upgrade that did that) - I just went back in and added a global permission set and - whammo - everything works again.

Thank you very much for the speedy help!
