Adding new members inserts dashes before and after user name

I added several new members to our user base today and when adding them to user groups noted that they were showing up with a double dash before and after their name.

Because of this, once I added them to the user group and then tried to subscribe them to the relative forums using the user name I submitted, nothing was returned in the member search until I added the dashes.

I realized that they would be unable to log in without adding the dashes.

Any idea as to what's causing this and how do I fix it?

sounds like you are not running the latest version of SP? That was some debug code left in 5.3.3 and was fixed in 5.3.4... for new users... for users where it occurred, you need to go to their profile and change their display name...
