Can I manually update SP 5 via FTP?

I'm having an issue with my Wordpress install at the moment. Although Simple Press functions properly, the automatic updater has failed with the past two updates. I think this is a WP permissions issue, but until I get that sorted I just wanted to know if it would be safe to deactivate SP, upload the latest version via FTP and reactivate?

Sure you can.
Don't forget you may need to update any plugins and themes you may be using as well.
