Yes, there is only one entry for SimplePress on my WP Plugins page. It is what I pasted above, showing 5.5.2 and prompting me to update to 5.5.3.

On the WP Updates page, there is no prompt to update SP.

I am willing to look at my server folders. The "able" might be questionable as I don't know what I'm doing. But I can log into CPanel and I believe I can find them, as I had to log in there and upload my backup file.

It goes through the update and then there's the "Update SP database" that I then click, and gives me the error message.

I changed browsers to see if that made any difference. Same thing.

Where are you seeing this message/link 'Update SP database' please? Once again that is not a Simple:Press message.

And what now of the Forum admin menu. After updating the code there should be a single menu item that simply says 'Upgrade Simple:Press'. What do you see please?

To answer your first question about when I see the prompt to upgrade the SP database, I see that after performing the update. I've just run the update again and here is what I see:

The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

Ah sorry. I searched the code using the term you posted. I see it now with the full link text.

So the second question was about the forum menu which - to save going around the loop again - I am going to assume does NOT give you the single option to update and still shows in the toolbox as being at 5.5.2.

The ONLY inference I can take from all of this is that WordPress is failing to actually perform the download and replacement of the plugin code even though it is reporting that it has been successful in doing so. Would you agree that that is about the only realistic conclusion we can come to?

And if that is the case - and I can't begin to tell you what may have caused WordPress to misbehave in this way - then the only reliable recourse would be to perform a manual upgrade as described here: https://simple-press.com/docum.....version-5/

Is that going to be possible?

This is what I see at the top of the forum menu from the dashboard:

Simple:Press Administration

There is one or more Simple:Press plugin updates available

There is one or more Simple:Press theme updates available

Click here to view any updates.

When I click there, it takes me to the WP Update page.

As for the manual upgrade, it sounds like:

  1. I will download the plugin file from you.
  2. Then I upload it to my WP dashboard and install it.
  3. It should replace my existing SP.
  4. Then I activate the new SP plugin.
  5. And then I proceed to do the updates to 5.5.3, which will hopefully work with the new install of the plugin.

If I understand that correctly, then yes, I am able and willing to do that.

Yes - that will download a zip from us. personally I always think it is better to unzip locally and then copy the unzipped folder ('simple-press') up to the server in the '.../wp-content/plugins/simple-press/' location. You could remove the content of that folder first of course. If you can avoid using FileZilla to perform the upload to your server I would as that can cause problems with large transfers.

It's not essential to deactivate the plugin before doing this but if you get visitors while it is being done it could cause them problems so probably wise.

I am sorry that I can think of nothing else and to me it remains a puzzle. I have been investigating a little though and plan to do more now I am back home.

Sorry to be dense but when I click on the file that I downloaded to my had drive, it opens. But when I upload it to my server, it's a zip file.

What should I use to unzip it on my hard drive before uploading it? It seems to automatically unzip for me but I can't get past the zipped file when trying to upload it.

Thanks.

You wont be able to open the zip like a folder when you are choosing a file to upload, as it will treat the .zip as a file, not a folder as Windows or OSX does.

When you open the .zip locally as you have done, just click and drag the 'simple-press' folder out to where ever you want to upload from.

Alternatively if using Windows, I think Win 8 comes with WinZip - You can just right click and choose WinZip > Extract to Here.

I think you can unzip in OSX by just double clicking the .zip file. Although I'm not sure on that one as it has been a while!

Hope this helps.
