I’m really not sure what to suggest or how this could possibly be as of a result of the child theme but I agree something is not quite right.
Could you zip up your child theme and send it to me so I can take a look? If so, please send to ike at simple-press dot com.

It does seem like a genuine problem. I tried not only your child theme but also our child theme frameworks against every parent theme with the same results. Interestingly custom forum icons work just fine but pre supplied icons don’t show variants. I’ve opened a ticket to get it fixed up.
In the meantime a temporary work around is to copy the relevant icons into your child themes images folder. Navigate to forum-themes > default > images and copy:
And paste them into your child themes images folder and it should work just fine. You should then be able to delete them after the next update to save multiple loading.
