Probably going to need a little more detail here...
- By 'groups' do you mean forum groups or user groups?
- Do the forums themselves have the associations of the right User Group/Permission Set?
- When you say 'cannot access' what are you actually seeing?

Disturbing. I have to say that this is not a known problem. Your setup there is most common - we basically have a similar setup on this site as well - and there are no known issues.
Would you be willing to set me up with an SP Admin account so I could look at your data setup. Note this need not be a WordPress admin - just an SP admin. This would probably be the quickest route to resolution.
If this is possible then please PM credentials to both myself and to 'Mr Papa'. Please include in the PM a link to your site, a link to this thread and brief reminder of the problem. And one of us will take a look for you.
if that is not possible then I need to work out what I have to ask you next
