no, having multiple badges is quite possible... just the default is if you have a special rank, dont show the forum rank...
problem is I just dont fully understand what you are doing... and glad to help you get there...
so first, do you understand the difference between forum ranks and special ranks? forum ranks are solely based on post count... in your image in post #8 that would be the far right column with newbie and moderator... the second from right column with members and moderators are not ranks at all, but usergroups... usergroups are groupings of users you create for assigning permissions on forum... special ranks are just a name/rank you can assign to folks without any criteria... all three can have badges...
please explain what you want to do and we can help... I get the impression you really want to doing usergroup badges... so anyone in the usergroup members would get the same badge... anyone in the moderators usergroup would have the same badge... etc...
I know you tried to explain earlier, but if you run through it one more time and try to say whether you are thinking forum rank, special rank or usergroup, it might help...

back in post 7, I gave you the link for the template function to use for usergroup badges... by default, those are not in our supplied sp themes... we show the forum ranks and special ranks instead of usergroup memberships/badges... so you may want to add that and decide if you also need forum ranks and special ranks...
you will find them in the spTopicView.php template file in your sp theme... just add the third one where the ranks ones are...
also, be sure you have your own sp theme instead of editing ours to keep from losing your changes on theme updates... see: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....g-a-theme/
glad to help!
