guests will be shown the last X number of posts that they have permission to view...
are you running any kind of caching plugin??

No i am not using any caching plugin.
If you take a look at my forum http://friskyttarna.eu/forum you will notice a strange thing with the permissions vs list in guest view.
All threads in the forums in the top group (Öppet forum) is open and readable for guests, and still none appear in the "Unread and recently updated topics" list.
The other groups below (Guild Wars 2, Lord of the Rings Online, SWTOR) have forums that are open to view the topic, but require member login to read the threads. All of those forums do appear in the "Unread and recently updated topics" list.
Should it not be the other way around?
I am very confused to be honest.
Well if a user can see the topic titles - even if they can not read the posts - then they will be selected to appear in such lists so it is not wrong that such topic appear. Whether the list is showing an accurate list might be a different matter and if it is not then this could be related to the other anomalies you have reported.
Let's try something. Go to the forum admin > Toolbox > Error Log. If there is anything displayed on the right hand side then clear it out using the button at the bottom of the list.
Run your forum page - refreshing the page as you say you can until you see the zero new posts. Then stop and go back to the error log and copy and paste the contents to me.

Well that's a pity. I was rather hoping we might find something in there.
if you would be willing to let us have a look at all your settings by granting us an SP admin account I guess it might turn up something.
If you are willing then please PM credentials to both myself and to 'Mr Papa'. Please include in the PM a link to your site, a link to this thread and brief reminder of the problem. And one of us will take a look for you.

I am having the same issue. My dashboard widget used to show unread posts, but now it doesn't since the upgrade. I have created a new SP account and that user doesn't show unread posts either. It all just says '0' unread. I do see in my error log that the timezone of my server is invalid. Here is the actual log:
file: /simple-press/sp-api/sp-api-timezone.php
line: 29
function: date_default_timezone_set
Notice | date_default_timezone_set() [function.date-default-timezone-set]: Timezone ID 'UTC -5' is invalid
You can see there is a space in there and that is why the error is thrown. Are you using the timezone to find unread posts?
you can ignore the timzone warning.. its a mere notice... and has been corrected in 5.1... its a shame that wp added those utc +/- in as timezone strings since they are not valid timezone strings in php... timzone, yes, but not timezone strings...
could you please explain the problem further... the OP was about unread posts on the front end, but you are talking about the dashboard widget in the admin... not the same thing... how is the front end working for unread posts?

Yes, both are not working. Widget and front end. I tried to add new posts and replies from both accounts and neither one shows any unread any where. But it does show the "Unread and recently updated topics" list at the bottom for the non admin account but does not show for the admin.
it does not show for the admin because the default is not to show for admins - most prefer to see the admin bar...
but you can change that... just need to edit the spGroupView.php template file (make sure you make your own sp theme first: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....g-a-theme/)... in the call at the bottom tosp_RecentPostList(), just add to the first argument, admin=1
just to make sure you understand how the unread post count works, have you read: http://wiki.simple-press.com/f.....ost-lists/
its a unread list since your last visit... so if you are logged in, you wont see them as new... but if you log out, then make the test posts with different account, then log back in, you should see unread posts...
