Postbag Warning Message

One of our forum admins got a message today that says "Warning: The admin postbag contains 252 posts which require removal".

I read the documentation on the Admin Bar plugin, but it didn't seem to answer my questions.

What does this warning mean and what do I need to do clear it?

Thanks!

Hey Jenn,

Have you got your admin bar loaded on the front end? Check Forum > Admins > Global Admin Options for 'Display the admins postbag in the dashboard'. If so, you should be able to see the postbag stats in the header - at the top of your forum page on the front end, along with 'View New Posts'

Do you see 252 posts there?

I'll add to what Ike has said. The bottom line is that if you are using the admin bar then you do need to  manage posts using it otherwise it is a wasted resource. That means marking posts using the buttons underneath each post. Otherwise they are not removed from the list. Get too many - like you have now - and it can slow your forum performance to a crawl.

Open up the admin bar and it is over on the right - 'Empty the admin postbag'. This will clear it out. But if actively and properly used you should never need to use this button.

Thank you for the response.  I think I understand how it works now and I will make sure to clear posts that way in the future.

One other question, do forum moderators also have this option or is it just an option for the forum admin?  I ask because our moderator do a lot more 'moderating' than I do and I am the admin.  So if they don't have this admin bar present on their accounts, maybe I should disable the plugin?

Ike, to answer your question I do see the postbag warning on the front end, but oddly, I don't have the option selected in the Global Admin Option to "display the admins postbag in the dashboard".

Sorry, possibly the wrong option as it's been a while since I've had to turn it on. Probably should be Forum > Admins > Your Admin Options.

Yes this can be visible to moderators, as you enable it in Your Admin Options you can also 'Grant moderators the same settings as above' and they should then be able to make use of it on the front end.

I've run into another problem with the warning message about the postbag being full.  When I click on click on 'Empty the Admin Postbag' on the front end dashboard, it doesn't do anything to clear the postbag.  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

wow, old topic... 😉

so what happens?

did you check the error log on forum - toolbox - error log?  would suggest clearing it if any items in there and then trying to clear the postbag...

might also check the php error log on the server...

and finally, with the browser console open, try again and let us know if anything reported...

Thanks for the reply Mr. Papa.

I have checked the php error log on my server and there are no errors there.

The following error was found on January 1st on the forum error log though... could this cause the problem I'm experiencing?  I also am not able to move a topic on my forum at the moment either.  I can click on the 'move this topic' in my forum toolset, but when I click on 'move topic to selected forum' button nothing happens.  The topic remains visible in the original forum.  This is the same behavior at the postbag button issue I was having.

Any thoughts?

Has anything else changed on your website recently? Like new WP plugins? Updated WP Theme? Adopting SSL for the first time? Anything at all like this?

No, not that I can think of...

I try to update things every few weeks.  I use Thesis as my WP theme and I add SSL over the summer, so I don't think it would be that.
