I've had a variation of this problem before, but I've checked everything I've done then to solve it and I don't seem to be able to now.
As you can see the "Hotel - Loyalty Programs" has sub-forums that are unread. But the forum itself isn't showing an unread icon and doesn't get the class "spUnreadPosts" to its div.
What could be the problem?

Not totally following but first question has to be which version of Simple:Press are you using?

Basically, I want the icon to be red when a sub-forum has unread posts, version is 5.5.0.1

A little more detail would be helpful... for starters, is this a one-off occurrence or does this happen all the time?

The icon of "Hotel – Loyalty Programs" always stays the same, whether its subforums have unread posts or not. So yes, it happens all the time.

I was really meaning all forums? Does this occur on all forums? I.e., is this a global condition?

I don't know, it's the only forum that has subforums.

OK - so it might be that it never has catered for that... I am not totally sure.
I will have to set up some tests to see if this is something that has never happened or is something that may have perhaps broken.

Sorry - but I am unable to replicate your problem on my local test environment and it does appear to be working correctly. So - that leaves initial two questions...
Can you confirm beyond doubt that your 'Hotel Loyalty Programs' forum DOES have a custom icon defined for 'Custom forum icon when new post'?
What Simple:Press theme are you using and has it been customised in any way?
