If you want to see the images on the front end, take a look at at theme, typically two locations...  theme/images and theme/styles/images...  the base theme images go in the first... if you are using overlays, overlay specific images would go in the second one...

yes, for your own theme, just replace the current ones with yours...  they do not have to be same name... but its easier if they are...  that would require no template file changes... you can change the names but then have to specify the image to use when you call the appropriate template tag...  so yeah, easier to use same name...
